Balgera 450 Rosso di Valtellina

Tucked into the steep terraces of northern Lombardia, Balgera sets the standard for Valtellina’s mountain winemaking tradition.
Founded in 1885 in the village of Chiuro, the winery has remained in family hands for four generations. Today, Paolo Balgera, who took over the estate at just 20 years old, continues to champion a deeply traditional approach, crafting wines that speak clearly of place. Valtellina itself is one of Italy’s smallest wine regions, producing just around 3 million bottles annually, perched in the Alps just south of the Swiss border. It’s a land of “heroic viticulture,” where steep, rocky vineyards demand handwork and reward it with precision and character.
From this dramatic terrain comes the Balgera “450” Rosso di Valtellina DOC: a pure expression of Alpine Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca. The name “450” refers to the vineyard altitude, sitting at roughly 450 meters above sea level, where cooler temperatures and long ripening seasons bring freshness, lift, and aromatic finesse.
In the glass, you'll get delicate aromas of plum, ripe cherry, and dried herbs. The palate is lively and finely etched with red berries, crushed stone, and light spice that unfold into subtle notes of leather and tobacco. Bright acidity carries everything through to a clean, refreshing finish.
While Rosso di Valtellina is often seen as a younger, more immediate style, the 450 sees extended aging, adding depth and complexity without sacrificing its hallmark elegance. Compared to the weight and power of Barolo or Barbaresco, this is Nebbiolo in a different register. It’s lighter, more mineral-driven, and effortlessly drinkable, yet still unmistakably refined.
This is mountain Nebbiolo at its most honest: shaped by altitude, stone, and tradition.
