This month we're thrilled to feature two wines from Arnaud Lambert, one of the most compelling voices in the Loire Valley today. While Saumur has long been known for its sparkling wines, Lambert is among a new generation of growers demonstrating that the region's greatest terroirs belong in the same conversation as France's most celebrated wine landscapes. His wines have become benchmarks for the modern Loire: precise, transparent, and deeply expressive of place.
The Lambert story begins with Arnaud's father, Yves Lambert, who founded Domaine Saint-Just in 1996 after leaving a career in industry to return to his family's roots near Saumur. Arnaud joined the estate in 2005, and together father and son embarked on a relentless pursuit of quality. The vineyards were certified organic in 2009 and converted to biodynamic farming in 2018. That same year, the family took over farming a collection of historic vineyards in the renowned commune of Brézé, an opportunity that would transform the estate and help revive one of France's great forgotten terroirs. Today, the combined domaine farms more than 40 hectares, and Lambert is widely regarded as one of the Loire's finest interpreters of both Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
To understand Lambert, it's worth understanding Saumur itself. Located in the heart of the Loire Valley, Saumur sits atop vast deposits of tuffeau limestone, the soft, chalky stone used to build many of the region's famous châteaux. This limestone acts like a sponge, storing water deep underground while encouraging vines to root deeply. The result is wines with remarkable freshness, energy, and a distinctive chalky minerality. Within Saumur, the hill of Brézé has achieved near-mythic status among Loire insiders. Its walled vineyards, thin topsoils, and limestone-rich subsoils consistently produce some of the most profound expressions of Chenin Blanc in France—so much so that many writers and importers have suggested that if the Loire employed a Burgundian-style hierarchy, Brézé would surely qualify as a Grand Cru.
Domaine Arnaud Lambert Saumur Blanc "Clos de Midi"
The Saumur Blanc "Clos de Midi" comes from one of Brézé's historic clos, a walled vineyard planted to Chenin Blanc on sandy-clay soils over limestone. The site is among the cooler sectors of the hill, helping preserve the grape's natural tension and vibrancy. Fermented and aged primarily in stainless steel, the wine captures Chenin Blanc at its most crystalline: white orchard fruit, lemon zest, chamomile, crushed stone, and a saline, chalk-inflected finish that seems to linger forever. It's tightly coiled but wonderfully expressive, with the kind of mouthwatering acidity that makes it a natural partner for oysters, fresh goat cheese, or simply an afternoon aperitif.
Domaine Arnaud Lambert Saumur Rouge "Clos Mazurique"
The Saumur Rouge "Clos Mazurique" is 100% Cabernet Franc from 40-year-old vines rooted in sandy limestone soils. Lambert's approach in the cellar is intentionally gentle: fully destemmed fruit, native yeast fermentation in concrete, minimal extraction, and no aggressive pump-overs. The result is Cabernet Franc stripped down to its essentials—aromatic, vibrant, and utterly drinkable. Expect notes of black cherry, plum, fresh herbs, cracked pepper, and wildflowers, carried by bright acidity and silky tannins. While the grape can sometimes veer toward rusticity, Lambert's version emphasizes purity and finesse, making it equally at home alongside beef carpaccio, mushroom pie, charcuterie, or a simple roast chicken.
Two wines, one estate, and a family devoted to revealing the character of place. Few producers capture the elegance and energy of modern Saumur as clearly as Arnaud Lambert.
