De Forville Barbere D'Alba

February 25th, 2026

Among Piedmont’s historic estates, De Forville stands out not for extravagance, but for delivering classic character at everyday prices.

The De Forville name has been rooted here since 1860, when the family—originally from Belgium—settled in the village of Barbaresco and became one of the area’s earliest producers. Now in its fifth generation under Valter and Paolo Anfosso, the estate remains proudly family-run, guided by a deep respect for terroir, heritage, and classic Piedmontese winemaking.

Their Barbera d’Alba is crafted from 100% Barbera grown within the prestigious Barbera d’Alba DOC—an appellation celebrated for producing juicy, vibrant, food-friendly reds. But what elevates this wine beyond the everyday is its thoughtful vineyard sourcing. Fruit is drawn from several communes around Neive, Alba, and Barbaresco, including parcels in the notable cru Ga’ Grosso. The result is added complexity born from varied soils and microclimates.

In the cellar, tradition prevails. Fermentation in stainless steel preserves the purity of fruit, followed by aging in large oak botti. These neutral casks lend subtle depth and texture without masking the wine’s natural vibrancy.

In the glass, it delivers exactly what great Barbera should: bold notes of blackberries, black cherries, and blackcurrant, framed by bright, mouthwatering acidity. That freshness makes it a natural partner for food—especially tomato-based pastas, grilled meats, pork, game, and aged cheeses. Smooth tannins and a mineral edge keep the structure balanced and energetic, never heavy.

This is a wine that punches well above its weight, delivering classic Old World character, expressive fruit, and real complexity without the luxury price tag. Fresh, vibrant, and endlessly food-friendly.
