Bodega Gaintxa Altxor Txakolina
May 13th, 2026
Perched on windswept bluffs just 150 meters from the Cantabrian Sea, Bodega Gaintza has bottled the salty soul of Basque Country since 1923.
Four generations of the Lazkano family have farmed these steep, foggy slopes outside the fishing village of Getaria, where pergola-trained vines cling to clay-limestone flysch soils and Atlantic storms shape every vintage. In Spain’s rainiest appellation, freshness isn’t a winemaking choice. It’s a way of life.
Their “Altxor” Txakolina is everything we love about the Basque coast in liquid form: electric, salty, wildly refreshing, and just a little untamed.
Made from the native Hondarrabi Zuri grape, the 2024 vintage bursts from the glass with preserved lemon, peach skin, lemongrass, bee pollen, and a distinct snap of margarita salt. On the palate, there’s green apple, citrus zest, and a lightly pétillant texture from naturally trapped CO2, giving the wine that signature txakoli lift. The finish is pure Atlantic: chalky, briny, and mouthwatering enough to pull you right back for another sip.
There’s more depth here than most txakolina. Alongside the razor-sharp acidity and sea spray minerality, Altxor carries a little extra weight and fruit, almost like Albariño crossed with Chablis, but with unmistakable Basque attitude.
At just 11.5% alcohol, this is one of those bottles that disappears quickly. It’s perfect for oysters, grilled fish, fried seafood, or sushi, but honestly, it’s just as satisfying on its own with salty snacks and good company.
Bright, savory, energetic, and endlessly drinkable, Gaintza’s Altxor feels like the kind of wine you keep chilled at all times. And at $23 a bottle, Altxor massively overdelivers. For a hand-harvested, coastal Basque white from old vines and one of Spain’s most distinctive appellations, it drinks far above its price point. This is the kind of wine sommeliers secretly stock up on for themselves. For lovers of saline whites, coastal wines, and bottles with genuine regional character, this is not to be missed.
