THE JULY SHUFFLE
SOUTHERN RHÔNE SOUL ON MT. VENTOUX
This month we're heading to the southern Rhône to visit Domaine Anne Pichon, a family estate helping redefine what the Ventoux appellation can be. Long overshadowed by neighboring Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, Ventoux has quietly become one of France's most exciting sources for vibrant, terroir-driven wines. Higher elevations, cooling mountain breezes, and a renewed focus on sustainable farming have allowed a new generation of growers to craft wines with remarkable freshness while retaining all the warmth and generosity that make the southern Rhône so compelling.
The story of Domaine Anne Pichon begins in the 1970s, when Roger and Andrée Pichon established the estate at the foot of Mont Ventoux, the imposing limestone peak that dominates the region's landscape. Today, the domaine is led by their daughter Anne and her husband Marc, who have transformed the property into one of the appellation's benchmarks through organic farming, meticulous vineyard work, and a philosophy centered on balance rather than power. Certified organic since 2009, the estate farms old vines rooted in limestone and clay soils, where the influence of Mont Ventoux's cool nighttime air helps preserve acidity and aromatic complexity even during the Rhône's hottest summers.
The Ventoux itself occupies a unique place within the Rhône Valley. Rising to nearly 2,000 meters, Mont Ventoux creates its own climate, funneling cool alpine air through the surrounding vineyards each evening. These dramatic day-to-night temperature swings slow ripening, allowing grapes to develop full flavor while maintaining freshness. The result is a style that often feels more lifted and energetic than wines from neighboring appellations farther south—a distinction that has increasingly drawn the attention of sommeliers and wine writers looking beyond the Rhône's more famous names.
Anne Pichon Sauvage Gris
The Sauvage Gris is an unconventional blend of Grenache Gris, Clairette, and Rolle (Vermentino), sourced from organically farmed vineyards surrounding the estate. Fermented with native yeasts and aged entirely in stainless steel, it captures the bright, windswept character of Ventoux with remarkable clarity. Aromas of white peach, pear, citrus blossom, and fresh herbs give way to a palate that is textured without ever feeling heavy. Notes of lemon zest, melon, crushed stone, and a subtle saline finish make this an irresistibly refreshing white—equally at home alongside oysters, grilled sea bass, summer vegetables, or a simple plate of chèvre and crusty bread.
Anne Pichon Sauvage Syrah-Grenache
The Sauvage Syrah-Grenache offers a fresh perspective on the southern Rhône's signature red blend. Syrah contributes dark fruit, pepper, and savory spice, while Grenache lends bright red berry fruit and an effortless generosity. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and handled gently to preserve purity, the wine emphasizes freshness over extraction. Blackberry, raspberry, violets, cracked pepper, and Provençal herbs unfold over silky tannins and vibrant acidity, creating a red that is both expressive and remarkably versatile. While perfectly suited to grilled lamb or ratatouille, its lift and moderate body make it just as enjoyable with roast chicken, charcuterie, or even served slightly cool on a warm evening.
