Cantine Garrone ‘Munaloss’
July 22nd, 2026
Hidden deep in the Italian Alps, just seven miles south of the Swiss border, lies one of Italy's most remarkable wine regions that almost disappeared.
Welcome to Val d'Ossola, Piemonte's northernmost appellation, where vineyards cling to impossibly steep mountainsides and every vine is tended entirely by hand. Rather than letting this historic region disappear, the Garrone family has spent four generations bringing it back to life, working alongside more than 40 local growers to preserve vineyards that were once on the verge of extinction.
At the heart of their work is Prünent, the local name for Nebbiolo and widely believed to be its oldest surviving clone. It's the very grape Pliny the Elder described nearly 2,000 years ago as growing on mountainsides, seemingly "eating the fog." While Barolo and Barbaresco have made Nebbiolo famous, very few people have ever experienced its alpine origins in Val d'Ossola.
The Munaloss Vino Rosso is the perfect introduction. Made from 80% Prünent and 20% Croatina, it delivers everything we love about mountain Nebbiolo with a fresh, playful twist. Bright red fruit, wild alpine herbs, and delicate floral notes leap from the glass, while Croatina brings juicy energy and softens Nebbiolo's firmer edges into a silky, low-tannin red that's ready to drink from the very first sip.
It's the kind of bottle that feels equally at home alongside a simple weeknight pasta as it does with a leisurely weekend meal.
Cantine Garrone Munaloss delivers an extraordinary glimpse into one of Italy's last hidden wine regions and one of the country's best values for Nebbiolo.
