Koehler-Ruprecht Chardonnay Trocken
March 18th, 2026
German Chardonnay is no longer a curiosity. Today, it stands among the most compelling destinations in the world for this noble grape.
Comparisons to Burgundy are inevitable when discussing Chardonnay, but this wine is no imitation. Nor is it anything like the heavily oaked styles that defined California for decades. Instead, imagine the layered complexity and precision of Chablis, energized by the vibrant acidity, cut, and crystalline sense of place that define the greatest German wines. The result is a Chardonnay with a personality entirely its own.
Today’s bottle comes from the historic estate Weingut Koehler-Ruprecht in the Pfalz. The wine is sourced from a 120-year-old, west-facing parcel of Chardonnay planted on chalk and sandstone soils beside the renowned Annaberg vineyard. Long respected for their traditional approach in both vineyard and cellar, the estate has built a reputation for wines that are authentic, and unmistakably expressive of place.
The result is a vivid Chardonnay that highlights the grape’s linear, chiseled character. Aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and orchard fruit mingle with flinty smoke and crushed stone. The palate is energetic and precise, driven by bright citrus and tart pear, with deep minerality and a subtle saline edge carrying through to a long, dry finish.
It’s a lean, mineral expression of Chardonnay—closer in spirit to cool-climate European classics than richer, oak-driven styles. The balance and clarity make it exceptionally food-friendly, pairing beautifully with seafood, roast chicken, vegetable dishes, and fresh cheeses.
It’s also the kind of wine sommeliers love: authentic, terroir-driven, endlessly versatile at the table, and offering remarkable value for the quality in the bottle. We’re also pouring it by the glass in the restaurant, so you can see firsthand how effortlessly it works at the table.
